My favourite Thriller Opening Scene
My favourite Thriller Opening Scene is the Opening Scene of the film “It” (2017).
In the opening scene of the film there is a child, Georgie, sailing a paper boat along the rainy street in front of his house. The boat suddenly falls down a storm drain and George attempts to retrieve it. Georgie sees a clown in the drain, who introduces himself as “Pennywise the Dancing Clown”. Pennywise entices Georgie to come closer so that he can give him the boat.
The scene is very intense and scary. The tension is created by the general atmosphere. The rain is heavy, the street is empty and the lightning is dark. These elements suggest that something bad is going to happen.
The tension and anxiety is created by the dialogue between Georgie and Pennywise. There is a costume contrast between the characters. Georgie is wearing a yellow coat. He is very visible and stands out from the dark background of the street. The houses and the sky are also dark. Pennywise is wearing a clown costume. His face is red, white, typical clown make-up. He has big teeth and sparkling green eyes. The storm drain creates a shadow that hides half of his face. The characters both stand out from the dark background because of their costumes of intense cors.
There is a low-key lighting that creates a suspense feeling.
In the first scene there is a wide high angle shot of Georgie running in the street. The camera is panning, following the child run. There’s a point of view shot of Georgie falling down. During the dialogue there are close up shots. The shot is from a high angle when it’s filming Pennywise, and from a low angle when it’s filming Georgie. These shots make the tension and suspense rise.
The editing has a fast pace, but the dialogue is quite slow. In the beginning the editing is really fast. The actions happen really quickly.
The audio is really important, especially in the first part of the scene, where there is no dialogue. In all the scene we hear the sound of the rain. In the first part of the scene the music is happy and creates a feeling of adventure. The music stops when the boat falls in the storm drain. During the dialogue between Georgie and Pennywise there is the addition in some moments of a music that creates tension.
The ending has a cliffhanger because the scene doesn’t show what happens to Georgie. It leaves in the audience a feeling of suspense and curiosity.
